Apple did not at first report any physical media circulation for Lion, for example, a lot of CD-ROMs or a DVD-ROM as utilized for past discharges. Rather, the working framework was said to be accessible only as a download from the Mac App Store for US$29.99. The main earlier form of OS X that underpins the Mac App Store in Snow Leopard, which suggested that any machines that help Lion at present running Tiger or Leopard would initially be moved up to Snow Leopard, instead of enabling an immediate move up to Lion.
The main reason for which people preferred downloading apps from the App Store is that it would just download the stub installer (web installer) which is little in size. The real Operating System will begin introducing after running the stub installer.

I have a Mac Air gifted by son. I am almost a dummy, with only very limited proficiency in mac. Son upgraded the OS to Lion free as it was allowed. It is running OK. Do I still have to spend USD 30/- to make a bootable USB stick. Is there any other method to make Boot USB key or MicroSD via USB reader for a dummy like me.
No, as long as you are installing Lion on your own personal Macs, this is fine. Mac OS X Lion comes with a very generous personal license that allows you to install the OS on all of your personal Macs. This method just allows you to avoid downloading the entire package again.
You have 11A511. The App Store version is 11A494. Slightly older version for the older Macs. 11A511 components are downloaded during the install process. See my comment to your other post about option-clicking.
This does not work for the version released through the app store as 10.7.0, there is no such install file left around. Maybe Apple adjusted the installer to prevent this? I am looking for a way to do this to install to my other machines as this iMac will be going back to Snow Leopard for the time being.
I lost my OSX SL CD. Can I buy and download Lion on my MacBook Air, make a usb-stick like this, and then do a clean install with it on my iMac? Or will this usb stick only be useable on the machine I made it?
Great instructions. Not tried it yet BUT just to be clear: if I pay my £20 for Lion on my macbook pro, I can put Lion OS on a USB and then install Lion again for free on my MacBook Air from it and it will just replace snow leopard on the air and turn the air into a Lion machine?
you will be able to do an upgrade using this methodon your macs as long as they have core 2 duo ornewer intel processor 2gb of ram or more 8 + gb of harddrive space free I would recommend 40gb + free forbest performance and even though you have downloadedlion using a Mac other than you are installing it on the installerwill still insist you have to be running 10.6.6 or laterand will not proceed with the upgrade unless you are running10.6.6 or later
If you have the foresight to let Time Machine perform a full backup of your Mac before running the Lion installer (but after it has downloaded from the App Store) then you can skip re-downloading the 4Gb file. Just go to Time Machine, visit your Applications folder, find the TM backup with the Lion installer (Install Mac OS X Lion) and restore it. Ta-da! ;)
after lion is installed the lion app will disappear from yourapps folder you basically have to extract the installesd.dmgbefore you or the Mac restarts to complete the lion installationalternatively you can purchase lion 10.7.0 on USB rom drivefrom the apple site or apple store for 75 aud yes is a littlemore costly but it gives the security that no one can formatthe drive on you making it a good alternative
Until recently if you wanted to upgrade (or downgrade) old Mac to Mac OS X Lion (from 2011) or Mountain Lion (from 2012) you needed to pay Apple and the company would send you a special download code to use on the Mac App Store.
Standalone updates let you update to a newer version of Mac OS X from your hard drive instead of using Software Update, which requires an Internet connection. This can be especially helpful if you have more than one Mac that need to have the update installed, since you only have to download it once. Download the one(s) you need and install them after mounting the disk image and launching the Installer program.

Although originally paid, Apple later allowed free downloads of the OS, especially for customers of older and no longer officially supported Mac computers, starting on June 30, 2021.[15] The same practice was applied to its successor, OS X Mountain Lion.
Apple did not initially announce any physical media distribution for Lion, such as a set of CD-ROMs or a DVD-ROM as used for past releases. Instead, the operating system was said to be available exclusively as a download from the Mac App Store for US$29.99.[17][18] The only prior version of OS X that supports the Mac App Store is Snow Leopard, which implied that any machines that support Lion currently running Tiger or Leopard would first have to be upgraded to Snow Leopard, as opposed to allowing a direct upgrade to Lion.
Apple later announced two alternative distribution mechanisms for the benefit of users without broadband Internet access: in-store downloads at retail Apple Stores, and a USB flash drive containing the OS, priced at US$69, available through the online Apple Store beginning in August.[2] On August 4, 2011, Apple started to take orders for OS X Lion's USB installation flash drives for $69.99.[19]
I have Mac 10.7.5 and I can't get a newer OS and I need to know which version of Firefox I need to download. Their old directory of files is extremely hard to navigate and I don't know which one I need. Please help!
Step 1:Go to Menu on the top left corner of your screen, then to About This Mac and check which OS X you are running on.If it is 10.7.3 or higher then proceed to step 2. Users of Lion Mac OS X 10.7.1 and 10.7.2 should upgrade to 10.7.3 or later versions, so you can get the latest Java version from Oracle. If your OS X is less than version 10.7.0 you will need to upgrade your OS X platformto a higher version. It is at your discretion to proceed and back up any data you have before you proceed with the major OS X upgrade.
OriginLab has made available a free Native Mac Version of the Origin Viewer. The Mac Viewer is a portable, standalone application that can be run without installation. Use it to open Origin files in the Mac environment (Mac OS 10.10 or newer) so that you can view and copy data to other applications, including the copying and pasting of Origin's publication-quality graphs and layout pages as PNG or PDF images.
