The B-side for this single, “The Beautiful Ones”, was a sad, much more moody song (overall, it was the third of the six songs from that album that Prince wrote for a different singer than himself). It was originally recorded as a duet with Toni Townes-Whitley for his debut album, and he sang the lead vocal on the version we know best from this single.
The song and video were also recorded for a German TV show with the title My Love For You, and was released in that form in Germany, France and Spain. The full video was premiered on MTV, where it was promoted alongside the Purple Rain clip. The song itself didn’t make its way to US radio, but the short edit (with the TV version of the song) went to the charts again.
The song itself was intended as a showcase of all his chops at the time. It starts off with Prince singing an off-kilter version of the song, a cover of another song. This is followed by a vocal that sounds like a younger Prince singing over a bluesy backing track, overlaid with a choir of men and women. After a final verse and chorus, the song explodes into a huge chorus of Prince, which is more or less how the song ends, although it's cleverly edited to not segue into it. This song was also released as a CD single in parts of Europe and North America.
Though the song itself isn't one of my favourites from the Purple Rain album, I do like the version for the video, with the original chorus injected into the middle of the song. And it's neat that he takes the song all the way through from the start, rather than breaking it up into two or more shorter songs as he does on some of the other songs from the album.
“The Beautiful Ones” also turned up in the movie soundtrack to the 1997 film “Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure”, and was included on their 2001 album, “Bill & Ted's Most Excellent Music From and Inspired By”.
The Purple Rain tour began after the album's release in June, and the album stayed on the Billboard charts for three weeks. The tour itself was a massive success, despite the fact that Prince was the one who kept booking the dates.
