Arsenal ended the previous season as league champions, becoming the first side since Preston North End 115 years earlier to do so undefeated.[2] They completed their historic league campaign with 26 wins, 12 draws and 90 points.[3]
The UEFA Champions League is by far the most momentous and significant competition in all of club football. Every year it features thirty-two clubs from a variety of leagues across the European continent competing for the bragging rights to be called champions of Europe and most often implies Club Champions of The World. In the past ten years, all clubs that have emerged winners of the Champions League have gone on to clasp the FIFA club World Cup trophy, a clear indicator of the prestige and calibre of the UEFA organized tournament.
Chelsea faces Manchester City in the biggest game of the season as both sides look to win the coveted Champions League trophy. Manchester City has already won two trophies this season, the Premier League and the Carabao Cup. Meanwhile, Chelsea barely managed to scrape into the top four on the final matchday. Both teams have had contrasting seasons as Man City has been remarkably consistent while the Blues have struggled to sustain their good performances this campaign. Both teams have depended on their systems to win the games rather than individuals scoring regularly. Ferran Torres and Riyad Mahrez are Man City’s top goalscorers in the competition with four goals each. Similarly, Chelsea’s leading goal scorer is Olivier Giroud with six goals, four of which came in a group stage game against Sevilla.
The difference between good teams and the best teams is that the best ones function as a unit, and there is no clear gamechanger. Every player has a specific role and needs to do it perfectly for the system to work efficiently. This narrative has been visible in both Chelsea and Man City throughout the last year. Both have relied upon solid performances from all players to play their natural football. Due to this, the final could perhaps be a matter of who makes a mistake first. Teams tend to approach such big games with caution, and a single mistake could decide the trophy’s fate.

1. Edouard Mendy vs. Ederson
Chelsea and Man City have been terrific throughout the tournament as far as defence is concerned. Both the goalkeepers have made some match-defining saves and have kept their teams in the game on numerous occasions. Mendy was crucial against Real Madrid in the second leg, where he denied Karim Benzema on more than one occasion. Similarly, Ederson has just been consistent in general, and his passing prowess has on display throughout the tournament.
The first metric that comes to mind when discussing goalkeepers is the number of clean sheets. Mendy has a total of 24 clean sheets, with eight of them in the Champions League. Ederson has 26 clean sheets, with seven of them in the Champions League.

Thanks to @WhoScored for these awesome H2H graphics ahead of the #UCLFinal (1/5) pic.twitter.com/zAa6qA6u8i
— The Pride of London (@PrideOLondon) May 29, 2021

Mendy has transformed Chelsea into a defensive powerhouse. His presence has brought a lot of stability to the side as the Blues struggled with composure in defence on several occasions last season. Mendy’s has a towering figure in the box and is difficult to beat with long shots due to his extended reach. An essential aspect of Mendy’s game that often goes unnoticed is his distribution and long balls. The Senegalese shot-stopper has a calm mindset and has constantly made some brilliant passes in pressure situations. He averages 5.2 long balls per game in the Champions League, an astonishing number for a goalkeeper.
On the other hand, Ederson has been guarding Man City’s net efficiently, as well. The Brazilian has a unique vision for a goalkeeper, and many of his passes have resulted in goalscoring chances. His ability to spot a run and release the forward into a channel is something that is rare in goalkeepers. However, he falls shy of Mendy when it comes to long balls, as he averages 3.8 long balls per game throughout the competition. Ederson averages less saves per game than Mendy, partly because the defenders in front of him have been terrific. Ruben Dias has been one of the best players of the season and has protected his goalkeeper regularly.

Next: 2. (Photo by Neil Hall – Pool/Getty Images)

2. Thiago Silva vs. Ruben Dias
There is one similarity between Thiago Silva and Ruben Dias: they both signed in the summer and completely changed their team’s defensive mindsets. With Dias, Guardiola has a stable defence and relied upon him every week in the Champions League and the Premier League. Similarly, in Silva, Chelsea found a leader and an experienced centerback who could calm the volatile back line.
Silva and Dias have crazy numbers this season. Due to an injury, Silva did miss a good chunk of the season, but managed to start 28 times nonetheless. Dias was a constant feature in Guardiola’s teamsheet and started 44 times this season. What is fascinating is that both these defenders have brilliant—yet similar—defensive statistics.
Silva came in and instantly organised Chelsea’s back line. It looked more reassured and confident with the Brazilian at heart. While Silva doesn’t have the pace anymore, he has made up for it with his immaculate game awareness. He has constantly stopped budding attacks with tackles and clearances. He averages 3.1 clearances per game in the Champions League and 0.9 tackles. Silva’s composure on the ball has also helped in playing out from the back and beating the press, that is a skill that will be useful against Man City.

Thanks to @WhoScored for these awesome H2H graphics ahead of the #UCLFinal (2/5) pic.twitter.com/Fe3kmd4oJU
— The Pride of London (@PrideOLondon) May 29, 2021

Dias was an expensive signing, and he justified his price tag this season. The centerback is an accurate passer of the ball and knows how to play as the last man. While some may call it “last-ditch defending,” Dias has been spot on with his tackles in and around the box, and he has protected his goalkeeper very well. He has lesser clearances than Silva with an average of two in the Champions League, but has a higher number of tackles with 1.3 per game. What makes Dias different from most other defenders is that he has been performing consistently throughout the season. The 24-year-old has slowly become the first name on City’s line-up, and that is a huge compliment for someone who has just moved to a new league.
The match-up should be fascinating as two contrasting, yet similar, centerbacks take on one another. Both will be crucial in the game as both teams will probably look to approach the game cautiously in the opening stages. Any defensive mishaps can change the narrative early on.

Next: 3. Jorginho vs. Rodri

      Chelsea’s German head coach Thomas Tuchel (L) embraces Chelsea’s Italian midfielder Jorginho (R) at the end of the English Premier League football match between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield in Liverpool, north west England on March 4, 2021. (Photo by Oli SCARFF / POOL / AFP)

3. Jorginho vs. Rodri
Jorginho and Rodri are unique players that are most than just passing midfielders, as they are often dubbed. They play in a position right in front of the back line, making their roles extremely crucial. Jorginho has been massive this season for Chelsea in many high profile games. Similarly, Rodri has been a vital cog in Guardiola’s system and has kept things tidy.
Jorginho is often called out for supposedly lacking in the defensive phase of the game. However, statistics show that Jorginho has been terrific as far as defence is concerned. In fact, his passing numbers aren’t as great as Rodri, but his defensive metrics are just brilliant. The Italian averages 2.5 tackles and two interceptions per game this season. He has intercepted crucial passes and initiated Chelsea’s attack with an intelligent pass. Discipline is an area where Jorginho struggles at times as he picks random bookings with some rash (and unnecessary) challenges. In attack, he has many goals as he is Chelsea’s penalty taker, and he has been accurate with his penalties this season.

Thanks to @WhoScored for these awesome H2H graphics ahead of the #UCLFinal (3/5) pic.twitter.com/Uvmdf8arEW
— The Pride of London (@PrideOLondon) May 29, 2021

Rodri is known for his accurate passing and his ability to rotate possession. He is the perfect midfielder for City’s system, and he has been a regular starter this season. With a passing accuracy of over 90 percent, the Spaniard has initiated many attacks from the base of midfield. The 24-year-old has lacked a bit in the defensive part compared to Jorginho, and that is one area he could improve further.
This battle could get interesting in the final as both teams like to dictate possession, and these players are at the heart of that strategy. With forwards pressing heavily on both sides, things will get difficult for these two, and they will have to be very careful as even one mistake could expose their back lines.

Next: 4. Mason Mont vs. Phil Foden

      Chelsea’s English midfielder Mason Mount leaves the pitch after being substituted off during the UEFA Champions League second leg semi-final football match between Chelsea and Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge in London on May 5, 2021. – Chelsea won the match 2-0. The discussion around Phil Foden and Mason Mount has been in the news as several pundits have started picking their team of the seasons. Before getting into the comparison, just a piece for art lovers: check out Mount’s heat map this season, it’s a masterpiece!
Without further ado, let’s get into the numbers. The first metric that everyone likes to compare his goal involvements. Mount has 14 goal involvements (consisting of eight goals and six assists) in 28 games, where he started 16 times. Foden has a total of 20 goal involvements (which consists of 12 goals and eight assists) in 40 games, where he started 34 times.
Let’s start with Mount. While Mount is known to be a creative midfielder, his defensive work rate is impressive. He averages 1.9 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per game, even though Tuchel has played him as a forward regularly. He is the leader off the ball as he presses ferociously and has helped Chelsea win possession in dangerous areas. Now, Mount doesn’t have too many assists in his bank, but that is partly due to the Blues’ poor finishing record this season. Most forwards have failed to finish chances, and Mount’s creativity has often gone to waste because of this. This feature of Chelsea’s game is confirmed further by the number of big chances that Mount has created.

Thanks to @WhoScored for these awesome H2H graphics ahead of the #UCLFinal (4/5) pic.twitter.com/1UultQvRRD
— The Pride of London (@PrideOLondon) May 29, 2021

On the other hand, let’s look at Guardiola’s favourite player, Foden. Foden has majorly played on the left throughout the season, as suggested by his heat map. While he hasn’t started regularly, his impact on games has been enormous. There have been several games where he has come off the bench and scored crucial goals. Foden’s defensive work rate has not been anything significant, but that is understandable due to his advanced position. He averages 0.9 tackles and 0.5 interceptions per game. In attack, Foden has wreaked havoc on the left side and has been simply unstoppable. While he hasn’t started every week, he has been terrific whenever on the pitch.
Mount has been phenomenal this season as he has played in several systems in different positions and has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent players. Similarly, Foden has been Guardiola’s trump card as he has changed many games. It will be an exciting match-up as both players will probably start in similar positions!

Next: 5. Combined XI

      Chelsea’s Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicueta (L) vies with Manchester City’s Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus (R) during the English FA Cup semi-final football match between Chelsea and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in north west London on April 17, 2021. (Photo by ADAM DAVY/POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

5. Combined XI
Man City has been dominating games this season. The Citizens have been ruthless and relentless in their pursuit of trophies. While they started slowly, they got into their rhythm and then maintained their form to clinch the Premier League title. Guardiola took a similar approach in the Carabao Cup and faced three of the Premier League’s “big six” in the final games and defeated them with ease. What has been remarkable about this side is that it has not lost its cool in pressure situations. The Citizens have trusted their tactics and have pushed until the final minute. This approach was visible when Man City came back from behind to defeat Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals.

         googletag.cmd.push(function () {
          googletag.defineSlot("/175840252/fansided.com/ThePrideofLondon/mpu",[300, 250], "minutemedia_slideshow_inline_300x250__desktop__tablet")
           .addService(googletag.pubads());
          googletag.enableServices();
          googletag.display("minutemedia_slideshow_inline_300x250__desktop__tablet");
         });

On the other hand, Chelsea’s season has been a mixed bag. The Blues started with a strong run of victories under Frank Lampard, and it looked like the dream of winning trophies under Lampard might just come true. However, things went south pretty quickly and the dream shattered. The board hired Tuchel, and he built upon the base that Lampard created in the transfer ban by inculcating all academy players. Tuchel’s new system worked magically as the Blues became famous for their defensive steel and rigidity. There have been a number of hurdles along the way for Chelsea. From facing Spain’s best team, Atletico Madrid, in the Round of 16, to facing the most successful team in the competition history, Real Madrid, in the semifinals. From being comfortable in the top four to almost losing it in the last games. The season has been quite a ride for the Blues, and the final is the moment when they define their season and their careers.
When Chelsea drew Atletico Madrid, fans quickly disregarded the Blues and delivered their verdict by clearly favouring the Spanish giants. The same narrative repeated when Chelsea went up against Real Madrid.

Thanks to @WhoScored for these awesome H2H graphics ahead of the #UCLFinal (5/5) pic.twitter.com/LTWe1uaAV8
— The Pride of London (@PrideOLondon) May 29, 2021

WhoScored’s combined XI contains three Chelsea players and eight Man City players, which means statistics are against the former.
